One of the benefits of going to Westminster College is that they truly want us to be well-rounded individuals. Part of my journey of being a senior is this documentary, but along the way of creating it I must fulfill the college requirements of “civic engagement.” I believe that with my project I am able to show my ability to achieve the college’s goals.
As mentioned before I have been dancing under the instruction of Jennifer Grimes since the age of two, therefore, I am quite aware of the way Jennifer teaches and runs her business. It was not that long ago that I was a student competing in dance competitions, so I have also had a first hand look at what it’s like to be in a dance student position. With this knowledge I am able to apply what I know from personal experience to contemporary issues concerning my film.
Besides touching on the dance world, I am obviously going to cover information on Jennifer’s family life. When I first went to Jennifer to discuss my idea she thought it was great, but jokingly asked if she had to be on camera. Since then she has gotten much more comfortable when I pull out my DSLR, but she still has concerns about what will end up being in the final project. Before my project, comes the respect for my subject (Jennifer) and I have reassured her and anyone else who end up in range of my camera, that my job is not to make her, her family, or her studio look bad.
Making this project also means I have to demonstrate my skills of producing, directing, writing, filming, interviewing, and editing. I am confident that once the final project is complete I will have confidently displayed these skills well. Since I am going into the broadcasting field, I like to think that I will be more than prepared for my future career after going through this experience.
